Company:

A.D. Moyer Lumber & Hardware — 4-Location Lumber & Building Materials Distributor

Reports To:

Ownership / Board of Directors

Location:

Gilbertsville, PA (Headquarters), with periodic travel to all four operating locations

Department:

Finance & Accounting

Company Overview

A.D. Moyer Lumber & Hardware is a multi-location lumber and building materials company serving contractors, builders, and retail customers across multiple states. As the company continues to grow across state lines, we are seeking a hands-on Director of Tax to build and lead the tax function, ensuring compliance, minimizing risk, and supporting strategic financial decision-making.

Position Summary

The Director of Tax is responsible for overseeing all tax matters for the company and its affiliated entities, including multi-state sales and use tax, corporate income tax planning, property tax, and payroll tax compliance across four operating locations. This role combines technical tax expertise with financial analysis and process ownership, serving as the primary internal tax authority while managing relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and taxing jurisdictions. This is an individual-contributor / working-leader role suited to a hands-on professional comfortable operating without a large internal tax team.

Key Responsibilities

Multi-State Sales & Use Tax

  • Own end-to-end sales and use tax compliance across all states and localities where the company has nexus, including registration, filing, and remittance
  • Monitor economic and physical nexus thresholds as the company expands into new states or delivery territories
  • Manage taxability determinations for building materials, contractor sales, resale certificates, and exemption certificate collection/validation across all four locations
  • Oversee sales tax automation/software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, CSP) integration with ERP and POS systems
  • Manage and resolve state and local sales tax audits, notices, and inquiries
  • Ensure proper treatment of use tax on inventory withdrawals, fixed asset purchases, and inter-location transfers
  • Maintain exemption certificate management processes for contractor and reseller customers

Corporate Income Tax Planning & Compliance

  • Lead federal, state, and local corporate income/franchise tax compliance, coordinating with external CPA firm on return preparation and review
  • Develop and execute tax planning strategies to minimize effective tax rate, including entity structuring, timing of income/deductions, and available credits/incentives
  • Evaluate tax implications of capital expenditures, real estate transactions, and potential new location openings or acquisitions
  • Manage quarterly estimated tax payments and annual tax provision calculations
  • Monitor state apportionment methodologies given multi-state operations and advise on state tax minimization strategies
  • Research and apply federal/state tax law changes (e.g., bonus depreciation, Section 179, R&D credits where applicable) relevant to the business

Property Tax & Other Tax Types

  • Manage real and personal property tax compliance and assessment appeals for all locations (yards, warehouses, equipment, rolling stock)
  • Oversee business personal property tax filings across jurisdictions
  • Coordinate unclaimed property (escheatment) compliance
  • Support payroll tax compliance oversight in partnership with HR/Payroll, particularly for multi-state employees and any remote/traveling sales staff

Financial Analysis & Strategic Support

  • Partner with ownership and leadership team on tax impact modeling for business decisions: new location openings, equipment financing vs. leasing, entity restructuring, and M&A activity
  • Analyze effective tax rate drivers and prepare variance analysis for leadership and ownership
  • Model cash tax forecasts to support cash flow planning and working capital management
  • Evaluate tax credits and incentives available for new locations, equipment purchases, or job creation (state/local economic development incentives)
  • Provide tax input on inventory costing methods (e.g., LIFO/FIFO implications) given lumber price volatility
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes with tax expense projections

Compliance, Controls & Risk Management

  • Maintain a multi-state tax compliance calendar covering all filing deadlines (sales, income, property, franchise, and informational returns)
  • Design and maintain internal controls over tax processes to satisfy audit and lender requirements
  • Serve as primary point of contact for federal, state, and local tax authorities during audits or examinations
  • Maintain documentation supporting tax positions, exemption certificates, and nexus determinations
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of information returns (1099s, etc.) in coordination with Accounts Payable
  • Stay current on tax law changes affecting the building materials/distribution industry and multi-state operations

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Act as the tax subject matter expert for branch managers and operations leaders on tax-related customer and vendor questions
  • Manage relationships with outside tax counsel, CPA firms, and tax technology vendors
  • Train accounting staff and branch personnel on tax-related processes (exemption certificates, use tax accruals, etc.)
  • Present tax risk assessments and planning recommendations to ownership and the leadership team

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant multi-state sales/use tax and corporate tax experience
  • Strong knowledge of state nexus rules, sales tax automation platforms, and corporate tax compliance
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Dynamics GP, Sage, NetSuite, or similar) and tax software
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain tax matters to non-tax stakeholders

Preferred

  • CPA license
  • Master's in Taxation (MST) or JD/LLM in Tax
  • Experience in distribution, building materials, construction, or manufacturing industries
  • Experience with multi-location or multi-entity organizations
  • Familiarity with inventory-heavy businesses and related tax considerations (LIFO, cost segregation, etc.)

Key Competencies

  • Technical tax expertise balanced with practical business judgment
  • Ability to work independently in a lean finance team environment (hands-on, not just oversight)
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple filing deadlines across jurisdictions
  • Comfort with ambiguity — building/improving processes rather than just maintaining them
  • Collaborative approach with operations and branch personnel
